In recent years, percussion instruments have seen extensive development and have become an essential component in various musical ensembles, including concert bands, marching bands, percussion ensembles, and orchestras. Additionally, percussionists have emerged as soloists, further expanding the role of percussion in both ensemble and solo performances.

In Thailand, there is a growing interest among students and young musicians in percussion, aligning with the rapid and continuous international development of this instrumental group. Globally, percussion has gained widespread recognition among performers, composers, and audiences, leading to an increasing number of compositions written specifically for percussion. These include:

  • Academic pieces designed for music education
  • Contemporary compositions exploring new soundscapes
  • Drumline performances, which have gained popularity as a competitive and performance-based art form

The rise of international percussion competitions has further fueled the enthusiasm for percussion studies, attracting more students and professionals to this field.

To support and enhance this growing community, the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (PGVIM) has established the Thailand International Percussion Festival and Competition. This event provides a dynamic platform for students, faculty, alumni, and professional musicians to engage in high-level training, performance opportunities, and artistic exchange. Through this initiative, participants will develop their musical skills, gain invaluable experience, and enhance their professional growth within the field of classical percussion.

By fostering an environment of learning, competition, and collaboration, this festival aims to strengthen Thailand’s role in the international percussion community and contribute to the development of the next generation of professional percussionists.
